Mission and development

Recent research has shown that the future for the Christian church in the UK today has to be one of change and development if we are to remain a force for good in society. We have moved beyond the stage of saying, “We’ll just keep what we have done for years and others will join us”. They will not. The church is perceived by many as being ‘out of touch’, ‘cold’, ‘hypocritical’, ‘only for the good people’, ‘too judgemental’.

These are harsh words for us, who have found over the years, that our membership of a church has been a supportive influence. Many in our District have been members of churches most of their lives, but we are surrounded by people who have never been introduced to even the basics of the Christian story. They are uncomfortable when forced to attend church for funerals or christenings, but at least in some places these rites of passage do still happen!

Part of the challenge facing us is to be, as individuals and as a church, as welcoming and as encouraging to others as we can be. For many years people have only been able to join us if they behave like us and fit into our way of doing things. Today we are being asked to think about how we can bless others, how we can find out the needs of the community and support them in meeting that need.

I heard of a church recently who decided that their purpose was to reach out to a group of homeless people. They were welcomed into the safety of the church premises and in time encouraged to attend worship. This was outside their current experience so there they talked loudly through the sermon, went outside to smoke and sat down during the singing. It was a struggle for the members to accept that the style of worship that had fed them for many years was not helpful to these new friends, and so graciously, they decided to adapt their style to suit the needs of the homeless people. Today, it is still not easy but the church has become a real sign of the kingdom of God where all are welcomed.

Could you do that sort of thing in your church?

Do you know what your purpose is? Which direction is your church going in? Do you have energy and vision and a mission?
